About The Malda College

Malda College, one of the bigger undergraduate institutions of the State at present, started its career on the 23rd July, 1944, as an “Intermediate Arts College” in an old rented building with about 8(eight) teachers and 150 (one hundred fifty) students. The performance of the College won patronage from academicians of the district very soon and the process of development and expansion gained momentum. The College acquired its new building in a large compound of 52(fifty two) bighas in the year 1952. After more than 5(five) golden decades of steady progress, Malda College has attained a prestigious rank in the field of higher education by virtue of its positive contributions. At present, the College offers courses level in two shifts, morning and day accommodating more than four thousand students. The morning shifts, operating from 6.30 a.m. to 10.45 a.m. accommodates the entire Commerce stream (General and Honours) and general courses in Humanities and Science. The day shift, ranging from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m., is meant for Honours and General Courses in 12(Twelve) Humanities subjects and 5 (five) Science subjects.

The College offers Post Graduate courses in two subjects - History and English. The library of the College, with a stock of more than thirty thousand books, is one of the better of its kind. The Science departments are well-equipped with laboratories, enriched by necessary modern gadgets such as computers, telephone, Flim-projector, V.C.R. etc. The College has a spacious play ground that serves the purpose of holding tournaments, sports-meets and cultural functions. A number of garden and orchards of different types within the campus adds to the scenic beauty of the place and offers an ideal academic atmosphere.

Another proud possession of the College is the twin auditorium inside the campus, built to commemorate the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the College in 1994. The main hall with 1050(one thousand fifty) seats and the smaller one with 300(three hundred) seats together can be considered the biggest and the best auditorium in this northern part of the state, equipped with the modern apparatus, shopping complex, guest suits etc.

The role of the staff and the students of the College in all the social and cultural activities has always been widely appreciated. The avowed aim of the College is to hold up its age-old tradition of healthy academic atmosphere secured through the sincere efforts of a band of devoted teachers and learners acting in perfect unisons. The extent of our success is exhibited by the students of the College, frequently all through its long history of more than 50 years. As future takes shape in the womb of past and present, Malda College is rightly confident of keeping up its glorious tradition.
